    Gaze Estimation on Spresense

    Gaze estimation is a valuable technology with numerous applications in fields such as human-computer interaction, virtual reality, and medicine. This report presents the implementation of a gaze estimation system using the Sony Spresense microcontroller board and explores its performance in latency, MAC/cycle, and power consumption. The report also provides insights into the system's architecture, including the gaze estimation model used. Additionally, a demonstration of the system is presented, showcasing its functionality and performance. Our lightweight model TinyTrackerS is a mere 169Kb in size, using 85.8k parameters and runs on the Spresense platform at 3 FPS

    A Robust Adaptive Hydraulic Power Generation System for Jet Engines

    The paper presents an innovative hydraulic power generation system able to enhance performance, reliability and survivability of hydraulic systems used in military jet engines, as well as to allow a valuable power saving. This is obtained by a hydraulic power generation system architecture that uses variable pressure, smart control, emergency power source and suitable health management procedures. A key issue is to obtain all these functions while reducing to a minimum the number of additional components with respect to the conventional hydraulic power generation systems. The paper firstly presents the state-of-art of these systems and their critical issues, outlines the alternative solutions, and then describes architecture, characteristics and performance of the hydraulic power generation system that was eventually defined as a result of a research activity aimed at moving beyond the present state-of-art in this fiel

    Towards Robust Velocity and Position Estimation of Opponents for Autonomous Racing Using Low-Power Radar

    This paper presents the design and development of an intelligent subsystem that includes a novel low-power radar sensor integrated into an autonomous racing perception pipeline to robustly estimate the position and velocity of dynamic obstacles. The proposed system, based on the Infineon BGT60TR13D radar, is evaluated in a real-world scenario with scaled race cars. The paper explores the benefits and limitations of using such a sensor subsystem and draws conclusions based on field-collected data. The results demonstrate a tracking error up to 0.21 +- 0.29 m in distance estimation and 0.39 +- 0.19 m/s in velocity estimation, despite the power consumption in the range of 10s of milliwatts. The presented system provides complementary information to other sensors such as LiDAR and camera, and can be used in a wide range of applications beyond autonomous racing

    Methods to Address Computed Tomography-Related Risk Factors in Oncology Patients: An Expert Opinion Based on Current Evidence

    Background: The present paper is intended to be a practical guide organized by statements describing methods to reduce risks related to CT examinations in cancer patients. Methods: A panel of radiologists, oncologists and nephrologists were selected based on their publication records in the field and expertise. Ten clinical questions, which were derived from clinical needs and an integration of all the committee members' suggestions, were stated. The modified Delphi approach was used; it involved a detailed literature review and the collective judgement of experts, including electronic and face-to-face discussions. Results: Ten statements were derived from expert opinions based on the current literature, recently developed guidelines and technological advancements. Each statement is discussed in a short paragraph reporting the current key evidence. Conclusion: This paper addresses the clinical implications of performing numerous CT examinations in patients with cancer, providing clinicians with information regarding methods to reduce risk factors in this patient population

    Assessing the Robustness of LiDAR, Radar and Depth Cameras Against Ill-Reflecting Surfaces in Autonomous Vehicles: An Experimental Study

    Range-measuring sensors play a critical role in autonomous driving systems. While LiDAR technology has been dominant, its vulnerability to adverse weather conditions is well-documented. This paper focuses on secondary adverse conditions and the implications of ill-reflective surfaces on range measurement sensors. We assess the influence of this condition on the three primary ranging modalities used in autonomous mobile robotics: LiDAR, RADAR, and Depth-Camera. Based on accurate experimental evaluation the papers findings reveal that under ill-reflectivity, LiDAR ranging performance drops significantly to 33% of its nominal operating conditions, whereas RADAR and Depth-Cameras maintain up to 100% of their nominal distance ranging capabilities. Additionally, we demonstrate on a 1:10 scaled autonomous racecar how ill-reflectivity adversely impacts downstream robotics tasks, highlighting the necessity for robust range sensing in autonomous driving.Comment: Accepted at IEEE 9th World Forum on Internet of Thing

    In-Ear-Voice: Towards Milli-Watt Audio Enhancement With Bone-Conduction Microphones for In-Ear Sensing Platforms

    The recent ubiquitous adoption of remote conferencing has been accompanied by omnipresent frustration with distorted or otherwise unclear voice communication. Audio enhancement can compensate for low-quality input signals from, for example, small true wireless earbuds, by applying noise suppression techniques. Such processing relies on voice activity detection (VAD) with low latency and the added capability of discriminating the wearer's voice from others - a task of significant computational complexity. The tight energy budget of devices as small as modern earphones, however, requires any system attempting to tackle this problem to do so with minimal power and processing overhead, while not relying on speaker-specific voice samples and training due to usability concerns. This paper presents the design and implementation of a custom research platform for low-power wireless earbuds based on novel, commercial, MEMS bone-conduction microphones. Such microphones can record the wearer's speech with much greater isolation, enabling personalized voice activity detection and further audio enhancement applications. Furthermore, the paper accurately evaluates a proposed low-power personalized speech detection algorithm based on bone conduction data and a recurrent neural network running on the implemented research platform. This algorithm is compared to an approach based on traditional microphone input. The performance of the bone conduction system, achieving detection of speech within 12.8ms at an accuracy of 95\% is evaluated. Different SoC choices are contrasted, with the final implementation based on the cutting-edge Ambiq Apollo 4 Blue SoC achieving 2.64mW average power consumption at 14uJ per inference, reaching 43h of battery life on a miniature 32mAh li-ion cell and without duty cycling

    Biology of mitral valve prolapse: from general mechanisms to advanced molecular patterns—a narrative review

    Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) represents the most frequent cause of primary mitral regurgitation. For several years, biological mechanisms underlying this condition attracted the attention of investigators, trying to identify the pathways responsible for such a peculiar condition. In the last ten years, cardiovascular research has moved from general biological mechanisms to altered molecular pathways activation. Overexpression of TGF-β signaling, for instance, was shown to play a key role in MVP, while angiotensin-II receptor blockade was found to limit MVP progression by acting on the same signaling pathway. Concerning extracellular matrix organization, the increased valvular interstitial cells density and dysregulated production of catalytic enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases above all) altering the homeostasis between collagen, elastin and proteoglycan components, have been shown to possibly provide a mechanistic basis contributing to the myxomatous MVP phenotype. Moreover, it has been observed that high levels of osteoprotegerin may contribute to the pathogenesis of MVP by increasing collagen deposition in degenerated mitral leaflets. Although MVP is believed to represent the result of multiple genetic pathways alterations, it is important to distinguish between syndromic and non-syndromic conditions. In the first case, such as in Marfan syndrome, the role of specific genes has been clearly identified, while in the latter a progressively increasing number of genetic loci have been thoroughly investigated. Moreover, genomics is gaining more interest as potential disease-causing genes and loci possibly associated with MVP progression and severity have been identified. Animal models could be of help in better understanding the molecular basis of MVP, possibly providing sufficient information to tackle specific mechanisms aimed at slowing down MVP progression, therefore developing non-surgical therapies impacting on the natural history of this condition. Although continuous progress has been made in this field, further translational studies are advocated to improve our knowledge of biological mechanisms underlying MVP development and progression

    ACEWATER2 Regional database: hydro-climatology data-analysis

    The report presents the architecture of a regional hydro-climatology information system, developed in the framework of the ACEWATER2 project, in order to support effective organization of information. Information includes both freely available large and regional scale data sources, as well as databases compiled by the CoEs (Centers of Excellence) and submitted as part of their scientific undertakings. The information system builds upon and specializes the JRC knowledge sharing platform Aquaknow (https://aquaknow.jrc.ec.europa.eu/), including: • at the system core, a relational database; its schema has been designed to store both detailed metadata and, where relevant (avoiding duplication of information otherwise accessible), data themselves. Metadata include, among others, datasets extended description, spatial extent, temporal frequency, reference Institutions/authors, credits and limitations, web links to access original data and/or any further documentation. Data can be stored as public or private, depending upon confidentialy and sharing policies; • user friendly facilities, supporting the end user in efficiently browsing, querying, uploading and downloading information (metadata and data). System access is limited to accredited audience, via password authentication. Dedicated groups for the three ACEWATER CoE networks (Western, Southern and Central-Eastern Africa) have been setup and scientists invited to register. Currently the system is operational and we submitted databases documented and, depending upon confidentiality and authorization issues, also stored. A general review and classification of freely available information at continenal, regional and local scale of interest to ACEWATER2 project, and particularly to selected study areas (Senegal, Gambia and Niger; Zambezi; Blue Nile and Lake Victoria), have been completed. Metadata and, where relevant, data themselves have been stored to the information system database. Information submitted by the CoE (a continuous ongoing process) is migrated to the database as well, depending upon sharing authorization and/or limitations. The report also documents the ongoing scientific research at JRC on climate variability analysis based on L-Moments statistics. In particular maps of estimated precipitation deficit for different return periods at the river basins of interest are presented and included in the database.JRC.D.2-Water and Marine Resource

    Air pollution and children’s health in urban and industrial areas of La Plata, Argentina

    El impacto de la exposición a contaminantes ambientales sobre la salud humana ha sido ampliamente investigado, encontrándose que muchos problemas de salud están relacionados con la contaminación del aire. En el presente trabajo se analizan los resultados obtenidos de un relevamiento empleando cuestionarios epidemiológicos a niños en edad pre-escolar de la ciudad de La Plata, capital de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina, y sus alrededores. Para el estudio se consideraron cuatro zonas, una típicamente urbana, otra con influencia industrial, otra de característica semirural y una residencial. Los resultados obtenidos evidencian, en cuanto a las enfermedades asociadas a las zonas en estudio, correlaciones significativas entre la zona industrial y dos tipos de afecciones: bronquitis crónica y piel fotosensible. Estos resultados están en concordancia con el elevado nivel de partículas, compuestos orgánicos asociados con las mismas y compuestos orgánicos volátiles hallados en la zona industrial en comparación con las zonas control. Otras correlaciones significativas encontradas se refieren a mayor predisposición a padecer bronquitis en la población que utiliza querosén como combustible para cocinar y calefacción doméstica y el desarrollo de bronquiolitis en zonas con tránsito vehicular congestionado. Estos resultados contribuyen con información de base de gran utilidad para contextualizar futuros estudios epidemiológicos en la región.The influence of air pollution on human health has been studied during the last decades. In this sense, several epidemiological studies have shown an association between air pollutants and various diseases. In the present study an epidemiological questionnaire was applied to a population of children between 3 and 6 years of La Plata and its neighbouring areas, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Four different areas were considered: urban, industrial, semi-rural and residential. Results show significant correlations between industrial area and chronic bronchitis and skin photosensitivity. These results depend on the high levels of particles, organic compounds bound to particles and volatile organic compounds found in the industrial area compared to control zones. Other significant correlations are related to the use of kerosene for heating and cooking, and a predisposition to develop bronchitis. Besides, the analyses of questionnaires show a correlation between bronchiolitis and heavy traffic. This investigation contributes with preliminary information to future epidemiological studies in the region.Centro de Investigaciones del Medioambient
